Better Together initiative
The findings of a study carried out by Laura Cooledge for her university dissertation contained some results which led to the creation of the Better Together Initiative. After speaking to over 150 women in various motorsport roles across the whole of the UK, she realised that they were under-represented (only 5% female Motorsport UK licence holders at the time) for many reasons and whilst the elite areas of the sport had various initiatives over the years, it was lacking at the grass roots level. One of the first steps taken was to ensure the safety of the environment so more women could be encouraged to participate.
Laura then delivered presentations to local motor clubs in the East Anglia area, raising awareness to enable competitors and organizers understand what is/isn’t acceptable behaviour at events, and launched a social media campaign titled #Wearebettertogether.
From this small start motorsport clubs across the UK and other countries are now sharing the message towards making grass roots motorsport a better environment for all. The committee of the Association of East Midland Motor Clubs fully support the initiative and are encouraging members clubs to do the same.
